Purpose & Why:
This study focuses on the first form of dynamic capability: the competence to build new competences. these abilities can be conceptualized as second-order competences.
Adding new competences to the firm’s repertoire is important for its continued prosperity in a changing environment.
Environmental changes make previously acquired competences obsolete or create new opportunities, either of which may call for new competences to be built.
In particular, the ‘competence to add competences’ has not been systematically conceptualized or empirically grounded. To address this gap, this study will conceptualize and measure two types of second-order competences and examine their organizational antecedents.
